Square dancing is a kind of social dance that you do in groups of eight formed into a square. It is a fun activity that pairs a physical component with a mental task, so it is very good for keeping your body and mind active. It was originally an American folk dance, but in the last 30 years it has been considerably altered to its modern form, which is now quite popular all over Japan, as well as in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia, and many other countries. It takes a few months to learn the basic steps of square dancing, but once you know them, you can join square dancing events anywhere in the world.
Tsukuba has a square dancing club that has been in existence for 35 years! In fact, this year, the club will be holding a huge 35th anniversary party at Tsukuba International Congress Center in December, so it is a great year to join the club. Classes start in April with one free trial lesson at the end of March. The classes are held on Saturday nights from 7pm to 9pm.
